Acer Apire 1410

I tried to update my Bios from within Widows and although it did not lose power at any point as it was plugged in and fully charged, it seems to have been the wrong BIOS. At least it has screwed everything up and it bluescreens whenever I turn it on.

Does anyone know how I can either undo the BIOS update or maybe apply a new and correct BIOS update? I can get into it for a couple of minutes in safe mode so I may be able to try another flash.

If someone could point me to an exact link to the 100% known-to-be correct latest BIOS update, I would be grateful. I found mine on ACER's world site as I could not find one on the US website. My machine is a US ACER Apsire 141- with the SU2300 processor.

If it was wrong BIOS then 1) it would probably not flash 2) your system wouldn't POST and will probably fail to turn on (the actual hardware, not Windows). So if you can atleat get to booring Windows then that is a good sign!

I think your problem is that when the BIOS flashed it reset the BIOS settings back to default. If I were you, I would go into the BIOS settings by pressing F2 right after turning on the computer, and then find and change the Haddrive mode to either ACHI or IDE. See if this helps your Windows boot. I would also try disabling D2D Recovery in the BIOS, but i doubt that would make a difference.

You can also try booting in safe mode and changing Registry to allow AHCI to IDE haddrive mode switch, or vice versa. You can find guides online. It is pretty straight forward.

Anyway, I think you'd fix it by changing Haddrive mode in the BIOS

For people who own this laptop.

I received mine yesterday and overall it's a very good laptop.

i might do a small review later.

The only problem i am having right now is that it has a few random major lags when i do stuff and sometimes hangs when i watch blu ray movies.

Share your experience with this laptop.

What is the resolution of the screen? I hear that 1366x768 is the only option offered?

Reply 2 : Acer Aspire 5940G - Core i7 - Owner's Lounge

yeah it's only 1366x768 which is a bit small for this laptop.

Reply 3 : Acer Aspire 5940G - Core i7 - Owner's Lounge

I bought one of these a few weeks ago and I am very pleased with it. Currently working my way through Mass Effect and it can play it with all the setting set to high so I am happy. Just needs a notebook cooler to lower the temperatures slightly but otherwise it is very good.

Here is a HWmonitor screenshot of my 5940G at idle and during playing STALKER clear sky. At complete max settings the game avg frame rate was 8-12fps so it isn't too bad for a mid range GPU.

What mxm type is the graphic card? I think it should be 1gb gddr3 550Mhz/800Mhz ddr3 but is there any possibility to be mxm-II type. Unfortunately i've seen pictures of it and the back plate is half size of the previous models; the hottest part is middle left side so the graphic card should be placed there but there seems to be no access directly to the graphic card and cpu from backside, (only by removing the keyboard you can reach but I don't(can't) want and I don't recommend anyone to do this). Where can we learn the mxm type?

adobe photoshop

Got a wierd one here, just purchased this computer used, with photoshop cs3 installed, I opened it to take a look, but did not use it. Now I cant find it in my start up menu under programs, it dissappeared, I explored the c drive programs folder and it is there, but I can't find a short cut or a launch icon of any kind. Adobe is constantly trying to update, but for reader, which I finally accepted. Any Ideas on how to run the program and get a short cut for the run?????

Reply 1 : adobe photoshop

how about make a shortcut from the program filesadobe folder? there is a photoshop.exe in there

Reply 2 : adobe photoshop

That's what I thought, looked in all the files and can't find one. Sorry I was so long getting back, been busy. I also typed in photoshop in the run program in start, and it said could not find, that is supposed to work in all XP editions, again no luck. Any other Ideas? I dont have the disk, could I some how go to adobe site and get it?

Reply 3 : adobe photoshop

You can go to adobe and download the trail. Not sure if they have a CS3 trials anymore (I wouldn't think so).

Charger jack loose?

Okay so for some reason, I left my laptop with my brothers over the weekend a few weeks ago and ever since the power jack wasnt feeling as solid as itr used to be. There was wiggle room and over the past couple of weeks its gradually gotten worse and unless I hold it or keep it pulled tight at whichever angle it keeps charging/discharging.

I called Dell about it and they said okay we'll send over a tech to get a mobo replacement done along with a new AC adapter, unfortunately I wasnt home so my brother was there and didnt know what the problems so when the guy left he signed that everything was okay, and when I got home last night I check it out and the problem's still there. Anyone have a clue why?

I called Dell today and they told me that Ill have to send in the laptop to their centre and they'll check it over within the next 4 weeks and if they find a fault they'll fix it, if not Ill have to pay for the repair because they cant send out another tech to replace the same part again and they arent giving me a replacement system in the meantime either.

I can feel the charger port is new and its not as wiggle-some as before but there is quite a bit of wiggle room and when i do wiggle it around it charges/discharges, I just want the charger to have a snug and solid fit when plugged in.

Reply 1 : Charger jack loose?

Could be a problem with the plug coming from the power supply itself.

Reply 2 : Charger jack loose?

the power jack is connected to the motherboard ( from what I saw on the disassembly video(s) on youtube. I thought it might be connected to a daughter board or as other laptops, have the power jack pin as a seperate wire that has a connector pin that connects to the mobo, but alas thats not it at all, so no idea what would be wrong. I'll try to upload a mini video clip showing what I mean, so you guys could understand what I mean

Reply 3 : Charger jack loose?

No, what I meant was the plug that comes from the AC adapter (power brick). Maybe that's causing the wiggle. And yeah, I think it sucks that first of all they put the power plug on the side where it can be more easily damaged than if it was placed on the back; and two, the fact that the power plug is part of the mainboard. It should have been a daughter board, that way people out of warranty don't have to buy another motherboard just to replace the power jack.

Reply 4 : Charger jack loose?

yeah I totally agree. and I made sure that wasnt the problem and asked them to send me a new AC adapter but using it recently in the past couple of hours its gone back to being loose again. if the power jack pin is a seperate part on the mobo it feels like its not seated properly and as if the connectors are loose but since thats not the case I have no idea how the new motherboard can have the same problem.

my screen keeps showing the Charging/Battery again and again after every 2-3 secs unless it just stays a specific way and then its fine. also another thing, this didnt happen before but the tip of the plug is like burning hot and first half of the plug thats plastic, before the blue run is burning up as well.

I dont want to and deff am not going to be sending my laptop in for 4 weeks without a replacement, problem is when I called up about a RAM fault around New Years it sounded like I as speaking to a European Team, a polish accent if I caught on correctly and they were really nice and friendly and I was off the phone within 5-6 mins but I felt like I was talking to the DELL team, and Ive had really bad experiences with their India team, he put me on hold and "spoke to his supervisor" and said that she agree's that they cant send another tech for the same part and I'm left with only one option. I rather keep my laptop in the current condition than sending it in for an unknown amount of time.

EDIT: I just got this laptop starting of Nov so its pretty new and had it shipped from the US to UK.

Reply 5 : Charger jack loose?

I had a bad experience with them as well the other day. Their support is really horrendous. I feel for you man. If you can, post a vid of what you're talking about. You got me a little worried because mine has a bit of a wiggle to it as well

Reply 6 : Charger jack loose?

Yeah I'm at work right now so when I go home later this afternoon I'll post up a video

Reply 7 : Charger jack loose?

Okay so I finally got a chance to upload the video, sorry about the video, I havent had a chance to check it out since I just uploaded it from my iPod touch. YouTube - M15x loose charging jack

I tried to show the problem the best I could but when I wanted to show it, it wasnt showing up as easy as it usually does.

Reply 8 : Charger jack loose?

Dang man that sucks. I came in prepared to say how my cord always seems to slip out at the worst times but yah mine can move up and down a bit but it doesn't go off plug-in power. Just keep calling/ yelling at Dell till you get it fixed. Remember you didn't pay 1500$+ for a faulty computer.

Reply 9 : Charger jack loose?

Basically, this has happened to other people I know with Dell and other brand laptops. Someone has picked up the laptop and walked off with it with the charger plugged in and wrenched it when the cable has tightened.

Not a product fault, just carelessness. You left it with your brothers, you got it back and it was f**ked. It doesn't take an Einstein to work out that someone has done something they shouldn't have.

Try to get a replacement if you like but in my opinion it's yours (or more accurately your brothers) fault.

Lesson: Don't lend a valuable laptop to someone who'd not prepared to look after it like you.

These might sound like harsh words, but I've spoken out before about people using the warranty service to claim against self inflicted damage. It annoys me.

If I was Dell I'd say you'd have to pay for a replacement component, unless you'd taken out accidental damage cover.

G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

Hi,

I got my G73 around June, and it worked fine for about 2 months before it started overheating on WoW. The right end of the laptop would get really hot, and would just shut down after a while. REALLY hot. I called up the ASUS guys here in India, and they repasted the thermal paste and ever since then everything has been fine. Until the Crysis 2 demo. For some reason, whenever I run the new demo the middle end gets hot (definitely not as hot as earlier), and the laptop shuts down. The AMD GPU clock tool shows steady temperatures of 90-95 degrees. Is the CPU the problem? Because whenever I run Crysis 2 the fps is awesome on max settings, but sometimes quick turns to the side can get a bit laggy (heard somewhere that this signifies some CPU problems). Forgive me if I'm being completely idiotic here, but I really want to play Crysis 2! I've been playing Dragon Age 2 along with Crysis 2, and haven't encountered a problem with that as yet. Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Reply 1 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

repaste again?

Reply 2 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

Your GPU temps are pretty hight. What are your CPU temps?

I recommend opening the system and cleaning it, dust may have clogged the vents or similar. Also repaste both GPU and CPU (unless the CPU temps are fine of course) I recommend repasting it yourself, it's not that hard as you may think and you probably have a better result in the end when doing it correctly. But if you feel uncomfortable doing so let the Asus guys do it.

Reply 3 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

almost g73 have overheat problem after 3 months or sooner, mine too bought april, overheat on june, RMA twice, tha'ts sucks!!!

Reply 4 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

Downloading Everest, will post the CPU temperatures soon. What is a good CPU temperature for the G73? Why does the fan on the right run all the time, but never the fan on the left? (This happens with everyone right). I'm going to run dragon age for 2-3 hours and see how it goes with that.

Also, is there some youtube video you know of which tells me how to repaste the thermal paste. I would look for it myself but don't really know a good way from bad :/

Thanks again.

Reply 5 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

The fan on the left is the CPU. The one on the right is your GPU. Sounds like you need a GPU repaste. I doubt your CPU needs it but you can do it if you want to. I'd wait until your warranty is over.

Reply 6 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

Okay idle CPU temperature is 48 degrees, and idle GPU temp is 70-75. When I ran dragon age 2 for about half an hour, AIDA showed CPU temperature as 62 degrees, and GPU as 91, 102, and 95. I need to repaste again?

Reply 7 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

Really high idle temps for the GPU, the CPU is perfectly fine. It's time for repasting. There's a slight possibility that it's because of dust and not because of the paste, but that's almost impossible as the CPU temps are fine.

Reply 8 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

What is the ambient room temp? And are you gaming on a hard surface so the area underneath the G73 is clear? The notebook automatically powers off when the GPU hits 110C or so as a thermal protection mechanism.

Paste does not make more than a few degrees difference unless they didn't put enough on to cover the entire GPU die which is unlikely. The problems with these notebooks are that the GPU heatsink is somewhat inadequate and the RAM thermal pads press up on the heatsink and reduce its contact area on the GPU itself. Basically the GPU cooling sucks which is ridiculous considering the size of these notebooks. There's plenty of room in there to design better cooling but they skimped.

Depending on your ambient room temp, 90-100C is a distinct possibility when gaming. Idle will probably vary from 45-55C. It really all depends on room temp.

Reply 9 : G73jH overheating after thermal repasting

If you hit 100, but no higher, you're probably fine.

So far, so good.. The installations went fine, using both the bootstrap installer which downloads the installation from the internet...and when using the standalone/offline installer.

Just an arbitrary observation....It seems a little faster than IE8.

Hope this helps.

Open Office Writer and Spelling

Hi all, last question today, I promise.

For years, I have used MS Office Suite because it does everything I like perfectly but the last time I "bought" it, was "Office 2000". Well, we all know that doesn't work too well on Win7x64 so I have reverted to "OpenOffice".

I have to be honest, I have never hated a program so much. One accidental key press on the wrong key and pages of work disappear, and I seem to all kinds of problems accessing the backups because of "access denied" messages. I finally moved where the backups are stored to "My Documents" so I can get to them next time.

But my real problem is with "Spelling". I have all the proper dictionaries installed and it seems to work pretty good, sometimes, but the real problem is that each and every time I open a new document, I am forced to go to "Format-Character-Language" and RE-enter the "English (USA)" because it keeps defaulting back to "none". I have combed through the tools and settings and it seemed like I got it to work for a little while but recently, it's back to defaulting to "none" for the Language. That is really frustrating and I know it has to be a simple fix but it alludes me at the moment.

I would be super appreciative if someone could tell me where to make the change that will keep the language setting so it always defaults to "English (USA)".

And thank you all for all your hard work and great help.

Reply 1 : Open Office Writer and Spelling

A little visit to the OpenOffice forum was all it took.

Turns out as careful as I was to comb through all the settings, I missed one check box.
