BFBC 2 framerate issue

I have the system in my sig and it is giving me problems. I have the game on low settings and 1368x768. It will play good some 50+ FPS, but then it will drop to 10-20. Seems to do it every couple of minutes. I know smoke causes a slow down, but sometimes I can be out in the open with no explosions.



My CPU and GPU both get hot. cpu 98c and gpu 77c. Seems hot, but I can play mw2 for a few minutes and they hit 100c+ and 80c+.



From what I have gathered the game is more cpu dependent than gpu, so why does mw2 heat it up more?



Power feature has cpu at 100% min and max. ATI power saver is turned off. Does the same thing at 800x600.

BC2 is very CPU-heavy and loves true quad-core processors, and the higher clock speed, the better. A 2.4GHz hyper-threaded dual-core can only accomplish so much.

Yep, a dual-core really doesn't cut it for BC2 unless it's 4.0GHz+ and then it will still struggle.

I disagree, my old i5 450m seemed to handle BC2 fine on the 720p. I used med/high settings and on full servers I was able to get 40-50avg frames easily. The older dual cores did struggle a bit more though.



From what you've said, I would say that your system is just fine, but everything is too hott!! My guess is that the system is throttling itself to prevent from overheating even further. I'd say you need to clean out the dust with a cheap air can, maybe repaste the GPU and CPU with some decent thermal paste, and maybe invest in a decent laptop cooler.

I had the same specs as you in a Dell Studio I was using over a year ago and on medium settings, it was very playable at 40+ FPS at 1600x900 I believe. Mine never dropped either, so I'm assuming there's something wrong with your system.

Given the fact your hitting 100c on the CPU I would expect it to be throttling back at that point to save itself from getting cooked. Ya need to clean the system as that's way to high on the CPU.

Well im playing with laptop from the sig and never got to 10fps, 30+ is the lowest, when there are a lot of smoke it drops to 20 in a sec and go back to 30, usualy its around 50, low med settings without bloom ofc, i dont want to get blinded by it

The overheating is the issue. Clean your vents and get your CPU+GPU repasted. That should solve it. Otherwise , your specs are more than enough to play BC2. Overheating never helps.

You guys were right, it was the heat. I had always just looked at "max" temp and mw2 was showing higher than bfbc2. Guess mw2 is too old of a game to show much of a slowdown.



I did not open the notebook because of warranty purposes, but got canned air after it.

Yes I wanted the 960 but didn't have the money then.

As you know I did buy the XBR970 knowing it idn't have the SFpitch tube didn't matter to me then and still doesn't now(wish it had it but NP )

MY Sony KD-34XBR970 is still pumping out a awesome picture and it survived a 1/2 move to our new home in Nov. 2009

I still love my Sonys, the best sets I've ever owned (XBR-960's) I've had them so long I don't even remember who I bought them from, some place in Washington (the state.) I also
bought the huge 58" Panasonic. Still stunning for the NCAA BB tourament 2011. I think I have met my match!

Good to hear about your Sonys. I have two and I live both, but mine are the SXRD and a later LCD. Running strong. Is your Panny a Plasma? We have two Panny Plasmas in our house and they have stunning pictures. My SXRD has terrible viewing angles, but the image is still stunning and I thought I would never find another picture as good...until the Panny Plasma.

Yes, the Panasonic is a 58" Viera plasma. 1080p, but don't remember exactly when 'the monster' moved in; spring of '08 I think. Picture quality goes without saying, I also love the built in TV-Guide and other perks. Hoping it lasts forever, because as with the Sonys its just too damn heavy move around.

My Sony KD-34XBR970 is now going on four years of daily use and is still kicking out an awesome picture. Someday I will most likely replace it with a flat panel but I am not looking forward to that day yet!

Highwayman, when you do finally replace your trusted Sony with a flat screen, just make sure you feed it a High Def source signal. Flat screens don't look all that great when connected to standard-def cable or satellite, but your jaws will drop when connected to HD. From my personal experience, I highly recommend a Plasma if they are still sold when you finally replace 'ol Nelly Belle. Don't follow the rest of the Lemmings off the cliff by getting suckered into buying a 240Hz LED. That's the hot ticket item these days, and every month I visit the in-laws and put up with their LED that I find has a horrible picture.

IE8: Toolbar colour changing 'automatically'

I keep on having this recurring problem. Am I the only one? Googling the issue, I see no-one else asking this question. My OS is XP Pro.

The only way-out known to me is to click alt + prt sc + shift, then choose the left option, repeat alt + prt sc + shift. As a by-effect, the desktop colour will change to blue.

After closing IE8, changing the desktop back to its original colour and opening IE8 again, the status quo ante is reestablished - until next time, which can be expected about the next day (the latest).

Rather frustrating situation. Does anyone have an idea how this can be solved?

There is no solution there at present, although the Original Poster, (OP), did think she had solved the problem at one stage.

I'm confused about what you did to solve this, (even if only temporarily). That keyboard combination of ALT + PrtScr + Shift, what options are you presented with, and where did you get this apparent solution from?

I am not about to try that key combination myself until I know more.

Is that ALT, (hold down), the PrtScr, (hold down), then Shift, ie all together? Or Alt, (hold down), press PrtScr and let go, then press Shift?

I searched for the combination here; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449 but couldn't find it.

I did find this combination in that link;

Left ALT + left SHIFT + PRINT SCREEN: Toggles high contrast on and off

Is that the same? If so, it looks like you are getting High Contrast settings. If so, then it might be that your system display is set to High Contrast by default. You can change that, instructions below;

In short, Start > Control Panel, then Accessibility Options, then on the Display tab, under "High Contrast", click Settings and follow the rest of the guidance.

Does that solve the issue?

Thanks for both your messages. What the key combination quoted does is in fact open the high contrast settings.

Let it, for the time being, suffice to say that I continue to experiment. Fx, I have changed my desktop colour - which used to be 'identic' that of the toolbar of IE8, thus light grey - to a darker shade of grey. As a consequence, the problem seems to have improved - thus not totally disappeared yet.


(I hope I don't make myself too much of an idiot here, I'm not much more than an 'experienced user', without real hard background knowledge.)

There are no idiots here, just people trying to sort out problems,

I would ask the question. Do you 'need' High Contrast to be able to see and use the display comfortably? If so, then your options may be limited in what adjustments can be made.

If not however, I would try this. If High Contrast is set, change that, then reboot, (restart), the computer and let it boot back up in to Windows with the normal contrast and display settings. That might make Windows remember the setting.

I have unchecked the 'activate contrast' box, but it seems that at times, it 'checks itself back', despite previous reboots. So probably nothing special, just another Windows issue...

Mind you, I forgot to mention that the colour my IE8 toolbar changes into - when it happens - always is BLACK. That means nothing can be read.

that the theme you have chosen for windows, toolbars, font, buttons, etc, does not translate well when the system slips into High Contrast mode.

Try changing the Desktop Themes back to some standard theme and see if that helps if High Contrast kicks in again.

camera with best shutter speed?

i'm looking to find a camera with fast shutter speed, but not and SLR camera. One thats small and still fits in your pocket. Preferably under $250/300. thanks

I am going to guess that you want a camera with very little shutter lag, which is different than shutter speed. Shutter lag is the time it takes for a camera to capture an image after the button is pressed. One of the fastest is the Nikon S8100; its shutter lag is as fast as some DSLR cameras. However, you should know that minimal shutter lag alone won't help you capture action in every situation, such as indoors and in low light.

Cannon, Panasonic, Sony, or Nikon?

I'm looking at purchasing a point & shoot, ultrazoom digital camera. I've looked at the Cannon SX210-IS, Panasonic Lumix ZS7 & ZS5, and Sony CiberShot H55.... I currently own a cannon camera and have loved the pictures it takes. The Lumix has intrigued me, however i can't find anyone in my area to speak with who has experience/knowledge on them. Could someone please give me some recommendations or tips on which camera i should get, that follow the following requirements:

* Must have a 10x digital zoom (i'd prefer one thats 12x or higher, but 10 would do)

* Must take decent low light pictures (i know these types of cameras don't take great low light pictures, thats fine, i'm just asking for those in this style that take better low light pictures than the others in this category)

* Price $150-$350 (would prefer to spend less then $300 but will go up to 350 if needed)

* Must be pocket size

10X digital zoom is an unusual request, and I doubt that you will find one.

If you have any photo manipulation software you can emulate digital zoom by just cropping.
That is what digital zoom (in effect) is doing.

So far there is no big zoom camera with good low light ability.
The best low light digital cameras are using a f/2.0 lens.
Such a lens for 10X zoom would cost a fortune and would be very large.

Any digital camera will do well in low light if you place the camera on a tripod.
Then you could shoot at slow shutter speeds.
That works fine as long as your subject is stationary.

Any digital camera that is using the new style CMOS sensor that uses back-lit technology will have about one f/stop low light advantage. So far, only Sony and Canon make that type of sensor. But they do sell them to other camera makers too.

Import Mini DVD into Imovie

Hi
The sony handycam DCR-DVD-205E i used to film material on doesn't have a firewire or usb output ( just an av output ) and i can't load the 8 cm mini dvds into my mac .
I would like to import the film into imovie for editing .
Can any one suggest a solution please ?

a drawer loading DVD drive - like one from LaCie. The slot loading drives like the one in your Mac Book Pro will not work with the small 8cm discs.

You will also want to download and install HandBrake to rip the video from the DVD...

Save the ripped file to MP4 or MOV file for use with iMovie. Less compression is better.

Alert: The VOB files contain very highly compressed video. Chances are very high that the video you rip will not be very good quality. This is expected. The video captured by consumer DVD based standard definition video camcorders was never meant to be edited.

Is has the same drawer loading tray design as regular DVD players that connect to a TV. There is an "indentation" in the middle of the drawer that accommodates the small DVDs.

Heads up: The VOB files captured by consumer grade standard definition camcorders are VERY compressed. Quality won't be very good. Best video quality when capturing video with those camcorders helps, but recuces available record time to around 20 minutes. Lower quality options selected in the camcorder result in higher record times - and the video quality degrades even more.

Be sure to finalize the disc before trying to rip the video.

You can certainly buy an external drive, but the easiest solution may be to buy a Canopus ADVC-55 Analog-Digital converter that allows you to plug your camera's AV cord into it and has a Firewire output that connects to the Mac, and iMovie will recognize the signal just like a Firewire camcorder. But, an external drive may cost less.

Both HandBrake and MPEG Streamclip are free. They both will convert the video file into a DV file for iMovie. Good luck.
