I've done a script that should do it all automatically. In detail:Manual Install:
What the script does:What the script doesn't:
- Configure gnome-power-manager backlight dim and hard disk power saving
- Download, patch, install and setup acerhdf
- Install the power saving script
- Install the debugging script
- If laptop-mode-tools is installed, suggest uninstalling and, if you want, uninstall
- Fix the brightness hotkeys issue (jumps 2 levels on every key press)
- Disable ethernet Wake on Lan (doesn't enable when on AC)
- Disable uneeded services: cron, anacron and atd (they don't enable when on AC)
How it works:
- Add the noatime parameter to the ext2/3/4 partitions in fstab. You'll have to do it manually.

The Script:Issues:By default, an ubuntu install won't take too much care of saving power, which is very important in an ultra mobile laptop. You can easily setup the system to enter some power saving modes, specifically the sata controller and the sound chip.gnome-power-manager:

- Hard drive power saving: in the battery tab tick on "Reduce hard drive revolutions when possible"
- Battery tab: tick on reduce brightness and dim display.
- AC and Battery tab: configure what to do when closing the lid and what to do on very low battery remaining.
- General tab: configure what to do when pressing the power button and sleep button (Fn+f4).
- General tab: configure when to show the battery icon.
In linux, and in ubuntu it's on by default, the filesystem has 3 types of date information: when the file was created, when the file was modified and when the file was last accessed. This last access information means that everytime a file is accessed (everytime you read a file), it does a file system write, to update the information. In My Honest Opinion, this is not necessary, and I would disable the last access information. How? Editing fstab and adding the noatime paramenter to all ext2/3/4 mounted partitions. You can edit fstab by doing gksudo gedit /etc/fstab and, there, add the parameter noatime to all the ext2/3/4 lines. Example on how the relevant fstab lines look in my machine:There may be people who may find the atime parameter interesting, I don't. Hard drives are already the biggest bottlenecks in computers, and doing extra writes won't improves things, so I prefer to avoid them.

Fan:Issue: the fan is controlled by the BIOS, and is running too loud and too often.

. it seems like things are finally running stable. the only problem i had is that out of 10 turn on of the laptop, there would be one when the fan speed runs on FULL SPEED even after loaded into windows. i had to shut down windows and then turned it back on to fix it. i already searched the forum and it appears that a lot are having this problem. Please post how often do you run into this non-stop full fan speed problem.

Screen flicker on the DV8?
I sometimes get screen flicker on the DV8t..usually upon booting up, or waking up from sleep. Usually disappears after a while, or if I open up a program(in this case it returns if the program window is minimised.
I did a clean install of win 7 pro. I have also installed Ubuntu 10.10 with the propiatary nvidia drivers, and the screen flicker is there also. Is the laptop defective or is it a driver problem. The bios is the latest. JHL90 (Sager NP2096) Not Charging
So my computer has basically stopped charging. It can run on AC but it does not charge the battery. Other times it will not run on AC. I got a new battery but that has done nothing. I emailed tech support and my answer was:
"Look like is the motherboard the charging circuitry is intergraded on the motherboard and the motherboard cost $ 400 labor $80 + shipping." Which is ridiculous... is there anything I can do? Inspiron 1525 Upgrades
Hey guys, new here. I've been looking around for upgrading my inspiron 1525 and seems like just about everything I searched for the first result was from this forum. I read some of the guide around here and there are a few things I would like to do with my inspiron 1525:
1. Put a SSD in the primary and a HDD in the optical bay: SSD would be . I want to use this because it has been used by a lot of people reparing XBOX 360 and PS3. Here's a picture of the paste currently:  There are two chipsets I would like to put thermal paste on, they're on the right of the ram chips. The top one with the metallic plate I assume is the cpu. If I flip over the heat sink the area in contact with the set has thermal paste already hardened. I would like to clean them off and apply fresh paste. The chipset on the bottom with the thermal pad. I t doesn't seam like the pad covers everything. I would like to take it off and put thermal paste on there. My main concern is that arctic silver conducts electricity and I'm not sure I should put it on because I suspect the little bumps might be individual components. What do you guys think? OK so I woke up yesterday am and my touchscreen was not working. Checked FAQ and sure enough it was racing off to the side. Tried the toothpick but no go. With a little hesitation I opened it up, just the screen and its back. I'll make it short and won't talk about the removal of unnecessary screws and forgetting the latch with 1st reassembly and just say that disassembly must have released enough pressure for whatever it was to fall out because it is working fine now. My question is what is the best thing to clean the internal screen surfaces, reverse side of TS and actual face of LCD (DN alcohol?) and where is the best place to find replacement screws. I was very careful and all screws are present but I can see that there magical disappearance is possible. Also does anyone add extra protection to there toughbooks when reassemble; extra sealants, home made gaskets, thread lockers. Thanks

There are a lot of BIOS MOD request forums out there but most of them only specialize in SLIC modification. Our job is to unlock hidden menu in the BIOS. We don't want to use "specialize" word here but we know the "how" to get the job done. Based on the old thread - Phlash16.exe v1.7.0.18_DiffSize (I have two phlash16.exe, same version but different size) is tested on Acer Aspire 6930G * Rename your notebook BIOS file (.ROM or .WPH) to BIOS.WPH * If you have both files (.ROM & .WPH), use .WPH file * Replace the BIOS.WPH inside this package with yours Extra info about modified BIOS image for Acer Aspire 9420 at post #4: BIOS_Aspire9420_VT_R5 - This modified BIOS image contain a modified DSDT which is part of ACPI table. You may require to re-install graphic card driver after flashing with this modified BIOS image. The reason is I inject different subvendor-id for graphic card device. It totally cosmetic & will not influence the behavior of graphic card. The modified DSDT is for running Mac OS X. It also absolutely compatible with Windows. Just started coming from the right side of my laptop. I went to pick it up and it started pretty much screaming at me. It was a really loud sound coming from the right, sounded like a CD scratching against a surface. I shook it a bit and the sound stopped, however, whenever I move the laptop it sounds a bit like a mini light-saber is stuck inside of it. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Laptop works fine otherwise. Anyone know what this could have been?
Restore Power4Gear profiles
Hi. I changed some settings in of the preconfigured Power4Gear energyprofiles thinking I could just click on "restor default settings" and ... well ... that button was always greyed out. So I deinstalled the Power4Gear Hybrid software, downloaded it from ASUS'S support webpage and reinstalled it, but the profiles arent back and I cant use the Fn+Space combination to change between profiles. Any advice? Thanks.

Satellite A200 Wireless problems
Hi everyone, I'm from the Tablet forums.. Just asking on behalf of my flatmate who has a Toshiba Satellite A200.
Everyone elses wireless works fine in our flat, but his connects to the network (or says it does) and then cannot connect to the internet. Anyone have any initial suggestions for this? I have tried to re-install the drivers, but it didn't change anything. I am going to do some better tests to see if he is properly connected within the network, it seems not (according to his computer, he is connected to an 'unidentified network') and report back. I I currently have a dell inspiron mini running Windows Xp in my room, hooked up to my 25' lcd tv via hdmi. When i went under sound devices the HDMI out was not listed as a playback device, only a realtex hd audio output. However, if i go over to the sound hardware tab, I see Intel HDMI sound out listed, Help! how do I make the Hdmi out show up as a optional playback device? Time Machine Backups Failing - Disk not available
I am having problems with Time Machine Backups failing because the disk is apparently not available. I have had this Time Capsule since September, and backups worked fine for about 3 months. Then, I started seeing messages about my backup disk not being available. A restart of the MacBook generally fixes the problem, but within about 18 hours, I have the same problem.
The deterioration goes along the lines of when I am backing up wirelessly, the backup disk becomes not available. I can usually mount the disk in Finder manually and may or may not be able to convince Time Machine to do a backup. If I connect my MacBook to the Time Capsule via Ethernet, I can get backups to work just fine. If Time Machine gets stuck making the backup disk available (wirelessly), Time Machine is unable to cancel successfully, and the computer is unable to shut itself down and my only way out of this has been to press and hold the power button. Then, after a restart and about 18 hours, the cycle starts again. Given that I don't seem to have any problems when connected to the Time Capsule by ethernet cable, this has suggested that my problem lies in the wireless network settings. At all times during my problems, my internet connectivity through wireless is fine - the MacBook just can't see the disk. I have restored the Time Capsule to default settings and reset the network settings manually but this hasn't fixed my problem. I haven't yet erased the time capsule disk, because so far I feel it is a network access problem. I have used Disk Utility to check my image and it did not report any problems. As the Time Capsule is set up in automatic radio mode (so can run both N and G networks), I changed the setting to only broadcast a network for the G radio mode. During this period of several days, I had no backup problems. Once I switched back to the automatic setting, the dreaded cycle started again. My Husband's MacBook is also experiencing similar problems, so I am confident it is a Time Capsule problem and not a MacBook problem. In addition, I spent a holiday at another house with a 2Tb Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) - slightly different model - and for over a week had no problems backing up to that Time Capsule. Dear friends, I bought the Call of Duty Black Ops last week and I tried playing it in 3D through my PS3 and Samsung LCD740 which are connected via an HDMI cable. Altough I turn my LCD 740 to 3D mode, the Stereoscopic 3D option within the CoD Black Ops settings is greyed out, not allowing me to ply in 3D.
Any ideas how to solve this ? ps3 power supply:is it universal?

Videos, Web Pages, File Downloads stall or fail

I have a new laptop with Win 7, IE8, latest Flash Player, etc. ALL of what I am about to describe WORKS with the same laptop and my PREVIOUS ISP with a wired ethernet connection to an AZIO router connected to a wireless ant on the roof. When I switched ISPs I got a new 3.0 Mbps DSL connection thru a 2Wire wireless router/modem on my phone line, all this fails running a wireless connection or wired on the 2Wire h/w. 1)YouTube or embedded videos will stop at random places, not a buffering and restarting slowness issue. If I hit the browser refersh it wil reload and stop at a random spot. If I SWITCH internet connections back to my old ISP the same things happens EXCEPT if I start a NEW browse session, then videos will run, perhaps buffering along the way BUT only with my old ISP connection. I cannot start a new tab in the original browser session and get a video to run with either ISP connection. Once a video stops in a broswer session with my NEW ISP, that browser sssion will not run a video. 2)With my NEW ISP, File downloads for MS or other updates will stall and if I hit the Browser refresh it will almost always complete. No such problem with my old ISP. 3)Loading a webpage will sometimes stop 'midway' but if I hit the browser refresh, it will compete, almost instantly as if it thinks it's waiting for the 'signal to procede'. 4)I believe this next one is a server or Inetrnet laoding issue but will throw this in. Running Windows Live mail retrieving large 2+MB e-mails will almost always cause the downlaod to fail with timeouts or server unexpectedly dropped the conneciton, etc. Works on my old ISP. ......Keep in mind, ALL this works normally with my old ISP and router. This seems to leave an interaction between my laptop's ethernet interface and the 2Wire router where some piece of s/w is getting confused/ getting lost in the handshaking or ??????? Macbook Air-Upgrading Memory, 1.4Ghz or 1.6GHz?
I want to get an 11.6" MacBook Air. I decided against the base model since I definitely want the 128GB SSD. I plan to buy an external 1TB Hard Drive to store a lot of data on but want to make sure that all of my applications and important data all fits on my internal hard drive so I don't have to always take the external drive with me.
I looked at the $1199 model which has the 128GB but it only has 2GB and has the base 1.4Ghz processor. Is there a big speed difference between the 1.4GHz and 1.6GHz option? I have seen an option where I can buy it for $1399 and it gives me the 1.6GHz CPU and 4GB of memory. I do a bit of multitasking and most of what would be done on it is web browsing, email, office (excel, word), Adobe Acrobat, Filemaker, and Bento. For this use would 4GB be better than 2GB and would the 1.6GHz CPU help a lot? One last question. I have often purchased my MacBook Pro's with the least memory available and purchased memory from OWC. Is it possible to upgrade the memory in the MacBook Air after purchase? Hi all. I built my PC a few year or so ago, and I'm considering putting some more ram in. I already have 2x2gb of 1600 DDR3 in my FoxConn X48 motherboard, buut I'm not sure if I should be worried about compatibility issues between the new sticks and the existing ones. I've read mixed answers from "Throw any type in, as long as it fits in your MoBo" to "If they have different timings your MoBo could get fried." So I figured I'd ask around.

I'm having trouble transferring music files onto my 2GB SD memory card. I'm successful loading the first 748MB of music files onto the card, everytime at this same point, I get an error message, ""Error Copying File or Folder",
"Cannot copy "song name": The directory or file cannot be created." I can delete a file and add a different file, but I can't get past the 748MB point. Its as if the card is full, which it obviously isn't. I've even tried a different 2GB SD card with the same result. When using encrypted disk images after ejecting it's possible to reopen the image without re-entering the password. After some time or something else, I'm not sure what, you then have to use the password. I'm not sure if this is a problem or normal. Any information would be appreciated. I am trying to install a wireless USB adapter which is asking for WIN98SE. I tried to install WIN98SE but the computer is stating that it needs WIN98 update instead. I have scoured online not finding a file specifically (yet vaguely) named "WIN98 update". IT seems there are SO MANY update files...how does one know which one to use? I even tried going to the vendor's site to download the software to accommodate my OS...but their file was corrupt or missing some nuts and bolts. Something strange happened as I was working on my iMac G5, running OSX 10.4.11. The desktop zoomed in and every time I move the mouse, the entire desktop moves as the mouse moves. It seemed to happen after I accidentally pressed the "control" key and another key (I am not sure which), but I can't reconstruct what happened or undo it. I tried System Preferences / Displays and changed the resolution, but it doesn't change. When I reboot, the start-up routine proceeds, the desktop appears normal for a second and immediately reverts to this bizarre desktop view. Any ideas?

New Sony D-50 portable recorder with "boot up loop" problem.
I have a Sony D-50 portable recorder barely three months old that did something totally strange. Has anyone else had this problem?
During a shoot yesterday, I noticed that the Sony D50 I bought back in August would not turn OFF. When I moved the power switch to the OFF position, the machine went into a "boot up loop," that is: I'd turn it OFF after recording. Screen goes black. I get the "See you!" message. Screen lights up again. The word "SONY" appears as though it's gonna boot up, Then the whole process starts over again Screen goes black. I get the "See you!" message. Screen lights up. The word "SONY" appears as though it's gonna boot up.... So, same thing late last night. I get up this morning and turn it ON; it works fine until I turn it off, then it goes back into the "boot loop" thing again. I tried everything I could think of, even searching for a "RESET" on the machine and in the Menu. I finally had to take the batteries out of it to shut it down. Then, I did something that apparently---so far---fixed it. This is so strange---right out of the Twilight Zone: I put the batteries back in it, then it starts the loop again. Since it won't turn OFF, I take the batteries out of it in the OFF position. I wait five minutes and put the batteries back in it with it in the OFF position. Same problem---the "boot up loop" thing. I take the batteries back out of it again in the OFF position and wait fifteen minutes. I put the batteries back in it while it's still in the OFF position. Guess what? Problem solved: It's doesn't start the "boot up loop" thing. So, I turn it back ON. Machine boots up fine and is ready to record. OK, I turn it OFF. Back to the exact same problem---It shuts down and goes into the "boot up loop" again. I go back through the same process of removing and installing the batteries with the machine in the OFF position. Nothing changes. Then, I have an idea. With the machine in the OFF position and going through the "boot up loop" thing, I remove the batteries. I then move the power switch to the ON position before I put the batteries back in it---had not tried that before: reinstalling the batteries with it in the ON position. I install the batteries with the machine in the ON position. Machine boots up fine and is ready for recording. Now, I turn it OFF. The machine shuts down fine with no "boot up loop" problem. Putting the batteries back in the machine with it in the ON position instead of the OFF position apparently solved the problem. ?????????????????? So, I turn it back ON and then OFF several times. Same thing: No "boot up loop" problem. Do-do-Do-do.... The machine now works fine. Anyone ever had this happen to a Sony D-50? I'm wondering if I should send it to back to Sony before it does this again. For God's sake, it's only three months old! Does anyone know how to remove the Trackpad software?
If I go to System/Library/PreferencePanes and delete Trackpad.prefPane, after deleting it from Bluetooth preference, the system preference do not open. Snow Leopard & Email. A solution
