MiniTool Partition Wizard 5.2 Home Edition

Easeus Partition Master 7.1.1 Home Edition

I'm using the standalone version by MiniTool.

Reply 2 : free partitioning software

thanks. i ve never partitioned a drive, so im guessing you run this tool once, it sets the partition and you dont run it again and its non-resident. am i right?

Reply 3 : free partitioning software

if using win 7 it has partitioning software built in

Yes, therefore I use the standalone version. Just boot the CD/DVD.

You can also partition within Windows 7, but be aware of unmovable data, like pagefile.sys.

Ethernet Adapter Driver

Hello everyone , so here's the outline of what happened. I reformatted my computer, and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP. Now, as you might have guessed I can't access the internet because I can't install my ethernet adapter. I have MSI 915 motherboard, and I'm not quite sure what my ethernet card is, anyone want to help me out? I think it's marvell yukon, but I'm not quite sure.

Reply 1 : Ethernet Adapter Driver

the ethernet device is on board. Do you still have the driver disk for the motherboard? If not, take a look at the MSI site for drivers. http://eu.msi.com/product/mb/#/?sk=Archive&kw=915p
There are many 915 models, so pick which one is the one in the computer.

Reply 2 : Ethernet Adapter Driver

I ususally go to the computer manufacturing website and enter in the kind of pc I have along with the operating system and get the driver, I might also add that I use another pc that can get to the internet then download the driver to a usb drive so that I can put it on the pc that needs the driver. After the driver is installed and I can get to the internet I then download all the other drivers that may be missing from the manufactures site as well.....hope that helps...

No Operating System Found

My girlfriend's Viao PCG-61611L recently started giving the "No Operating System Found" error upon startup. This model comes with no Windows 7 restore disks and attempts to use recovery options finds no operating system to fix or restore. Bios sees the HD, I'm wondering if the MBR is corrupt? Nonetheless, any help with fixing this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Creating and Burning Photo Slideshow to a DVD

Hi, I can not figure out how to get my Photo Slideshow to burn onto a DVD. I have read many comments on different software, have asked people for recommendations and just seem to be missing something. I am not good at figuring this stuff out by myself. I am only computer literate to the extent necessary to do what I need to do. Branching out is not easy for me. I thought I was doing quite well considering but I have hit a roadblock I can not overcome.

I started with buying my digital camera, taking lots of pictures, uploading to my computer, bought Photoshop Elements to edit and then found that it could also make a slideshow. It looks great on my computer and that is as far as it goes. I have since figured out that it will only burn to a CD in VCD format which looks awful by comparison so off I went in another direction. Of course that was not before someone said, you need to burn it to a DVD so I also now have a DVD Burner that came with some version of Nero that also does not seem to want to burn to DVD's. I am not getting Photoshop Premier for this project which was also suggested.

I went back to the camera shop and they suggested Roxio 10. More googling later I am wondering if that means Roxio Creator 10 which seems way more than I will ever be able to do. Not to mention I have no clue how to figure out if I meet all of the system requirements. Right now I am already running slower than humanly possible due to all of the stuff I have downloaded and the huge amount of pictures I have waiting or something to do with them. I am sure I will be heading for disaster soon.

I have created the slideshow in Photoshop, Movie Maker and Nero. My problem is not with being able to create the slideshow. My problem is with how to get the slideshow to burn on a DVD, not a CD. Are there simple instructions somewhere on how to do this? It seems like I have read so much and still can not figure this out. If you can also lead me in the right direction on how to hire someone to help me with this or where to take a class that would be great too. It does not seem like it should be this difficult. I know if someone tells me you need this, this and that and here is how to make it all work together ... I will be fine. I just can not get to that point myself and honestly I am so frustrated now I don't know what to do. I have invested hours upon hours into this project since March. Pretty bad, Huh! If anyone has any thoughts on this, I would really appreciate the feedback.

I suppose you should know I am using a PC with Windows XP. I found something that said 1.5 Ghz and 704 MB Ram. Thank you for bearing with me to the end.

Reply 1 : Creating and Burning Photo Slideshow to a DVD

You will need to render your slide show to a movie file such as a QuickTime Movie encoded with H.264.

Then try using DVD Styler (free) which will take any video file as input and burn a DVD-Video.

http://www.dvdstyler.de/

You can also read my article on burning DVD slide shows. It's oriented around my software, Photo to Movie, but all of the principles are the same for any software:

I am at an intersection and do not know which way to turn. I am wishing and hoping that you can give me some advice. I own PI 8.5. Have had it for a number of years and am completely satisfied with the software. Went to Europe in May and wanted to put photos on a TV DVD. Could not burn the DVD for TV but could burn a CD for PC and computer screensaver. So had numerous chats and talks with tech support and finally realized that I needed to purchase an unlock code. This unlock code is not mentioned in the manual, do not have the original box. So I ordered this code and it did not work. More talking and was told that I needed to purchase the new PI 13 so I went to the local retailer and read all information on box and pages on outside of box and no mention of a code. Prior to purchase, I called customer no service today and was told that I would need to purchase an unlock code for this software also. I told them that this is not mentioned on the box or manual, only raves about the quality of the TV DVD's. Asked them to refund my money for unlock code purchased for 8.5, said I would receive confirmation email but have not received it yet. Do you know anything about these unlock codes? Do you have a suggestion for a program that will burn TV DVD's without charging you a hidden extra fee to be able to do this process? I really want to get these DVD's finished as our friends that travel with us is not in good health. Please help me.
Thanks in advance. Jen

I have been making dvd slide shows for some years now,
with terrific results, the program I use is Pinnacle Studio 7, this enables you to download your photo's to a file then import them into the program, you can then add Transitions, music. voice over, and much more.
You add all this to an album within the program on screen, when your ready you go to Make Disc, put in a dvd blank. press go and the jobs done for you.

Reply 4 : Creating and Burning Photo Slideshow to a DVD

This sounds easy but do I need anything other than this program on my computer?

Is this a free download or a purchase?

Reply 5 : Creating and Burning Photo Slideshow to a DVD

this is not a free program, visit pinnaclesystems.com they offer a free 14 day trial.
incidentally I made a mistake on the version I use its the Studio ultimate version 11.
Buying the program (software) will cost new appro ?60, but its well worth the money.
Aslong as your computer meets the requirements and you have a dvd read/rom/write drive all you need is the software. Another way would be to check out Ebay for different versions current version is 14, but would imagine you could get my version much cheaper.
I have used my version on windows xp, vista, and currently on windows 7 with no problems.Another software program I have used is Magix Photos on CD and DVD also with very good results, but prefer Pinnacle for ease of drag and drop. good luck Ken.
incidently studio allows you to connect your cam corder directly to the computer upload the film to the program, then you can cut out all the crap, add music, voice over and the rest, this is really what the program is intended for, but works just a well with photos into a slide show.

Reply 6 : Creating and Burning Photo Slideshow to a DVD

Hi,

I had the same problem. Also being a newbie - as well as stubborn, I spent weeks trying to figure it out.

I was at best buy one day and found a product by Magix called photostory for $20.00.

I worked like magic (no pun intended) and it was so easy to use, that I now have quite a few home made videos. I am sure that if I could do this, so can you. For the price, you cant go wrong.

The down side is you can never get an answer from them on technical issues.

Good luck, and have fun

SD card problems, help!

I have a Sony memory stick duo 128mb sd card. Today at work i took like 400 pics and now i can get them to show up on the computer or the camera, just shows an empty folder, however the properties of the drive say that its still got 40mb in use on the card. ive tried on 4 PCs now, using xp and vista/7

anyone know how i may go about recovering these photos?

Is it possible to upgrade the cpu?

Hello guys, I just recently got the Alienware AM11X-2719CSB and was wondering if it is possible the upgrade the Core 2 Duo SU7300 to say the SU9000 series?

Sorry if this question has been answered but did a search and couldn't find anything. Thanks!

Yes, only in theory, provided the BIOS already supports or can modded to support something like the SU9600. You'll need to do BGA reballing however and that is enough to deter most, if not all, people from trying.

So practically, no.

You could pinmod it to make it faster though.

CPU is soldered so changing it would require super human concentration.

has anyone ever attempted this? I know someone that has the equipment/experience...

An IT guy on campus got to talking to me about his Alienware M11x and seemed to think it was possible. He said it would certainly require some tricky work with the motherboard though.

Unless you absolutely know what you're doing, I don't think it's really worth risking it. If you brick your laptop, I doubt Dell will have much sympathy for you.

No. We don't even know if the BIOS will support the SU9600 so it's best to start by checking the BIOS CPU microcode at bios-mods.com. Should be OK to mod it in as it's a Phoenix BIOS. Look in the M17x subforum, some amazing BIOS hacks to enable further overclocking were done there.

Another problem I can see is that it will always run at 1.6Ghz with or without overclock mode as with it on, BSEL will turn the 8x multiplier to 6x for 1.6Ghz (6x266) and off, it would be 8x200. A pinmod can fix this.

The type who will do this don't care about the risk or Dell's sympathy.

I would be BLOWN AWAY if some one had a steady enough hand to desolder the old CPU and solder in a new one.

It is possible and the hard part isn't soldering, that takes hours and minutes or even the equipment- this can be ghetto modded with a heat gun. No, the hard part is securing a SU9600 somewhere and a socket 956 stencil for the solder balls.

Reply 8 : Is it possible to upgrade the cpu?

Well I was'nt expecting to cpu to be soldered on, if thats the case the its not worth the effort to get a bit increase in ghz even tho I have all the tools necessary to desolder the cpu. Thanks for the quick responses!

Awesome! I didn't know that this was possible. I'll take a look into it. Thanks!

Login to Outlook Express Failure.

I have read about this problem occurring on several occasions before, but not seen a response reported that cured it. My apologies if I raise it once again (hopefully, this time, for a successful conclusion to MY current problem). I live in the United Kingdom, in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and my ISP is 'Talk Talk' (originally I used 'Tiscali' which was taken over by 'Talk Talk' Internet Services some time ago, but have had no real problems with either provider in the past).

A few days ago our three household computers blocked email facilities - in and out - suddenly, all at the same time. They are wirelessly linked to a British Telecoms phone line through a common router. I get the onscreen message reading, "Logon - pop. tiscali.co.uk" in a pop-up window each time I try to receive or send mail. The window asks me to enter username and password. These are both shown correctly, but even if I re-enter them the window returns to my screen almost immediately. The larger Outlook Express process window tells me that I have a problem logging into my mail server (as if I DIDN'T already know!), and tells me that I have password rejection due to, "No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number:0x800CCC92". I've tried a System Restore change - it made no difference to the problem, as did re-entering the mail set-up details. I've also shut down and disconnected and then reconnected the router. The problem seems to come from outside of the computers, or something that affects each of them concurrently.

I am running Windows XP, using OE6 and IE8 as my main email and internet provision. I also run Firefox and Google Chrome. I've had no problems with my email reception before on my Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop, which is about six years old but gives me little in the way of problems. I also have a desktop PC (a Fujitsu Seimens Scaleo L running XP Professional) and my wife has a brand new laptop (an Acer Aspire 5742Z running Windows 7). The other two computers also have links into OE for email service, though the Aspire runs it through the updated Windows 7 programme. I am happy to run OE6; I'm used to it and it gives me what I require. I also don't want to go through the hassle of a change of address and advising friends and family of a change. I'd be very grateful for some advice and help with this problem, please. Thanks, folks!

Reply 1 : Login to Outlook Express Failure.

Three things to try.

1. See if username and password still work from their webmail (if they have any).
2. Check the account settings - although it's VERY unlikely they fail all all three PC's at the same time.
3. Contact their customer service. A 'server error' is something with them, after all, not with you.

Reply 2 : Login to Outlook Express Failure.

Thanks for that, Kees_B. I've already tried items 1 and 2 of your suggested actions to no avail. I haven't tried suggestion 3 yet, but will - especially now that I've been advised by my ISP that I no longer have to pay for a technical or fault report phone call to them (used to cost an arm and a leg - as you probably know!). What puzzled me initially was that the fault condition occurred on all three computers, and that it had lasted so long: normally an ISP's server fault would be rectified quite quickly because it would affect so many people. I can't believe that such a fault condition would only affect my three computers!

Please would anyone who has any further suggestions contact me via CNET and help? Many thanks.

Coming and going at the same time?

Well, that's not QUITE what the study suggested but I couldn't resist the line:
Sex can be heart attack trigger for couch potatoes
Sex and exercise can trigger heart attacks in older people who don't get much of either, a new analysis finds. The risk is low, but it's a good reminder that slackers should change their exercise habits gradually, especially in middle age.

This might put a whole new perspective on 'not getting any'. I wonder if it will slow down sales of those little blue pills?

Reply 1 : Coming and going at the same time?

from the song "I'm Tired" performed by the late Madeleine Kahn.

"I've been with hundreds of men, again and again,
They all sing the same tune.
They're always coming and going and going and coming,
And always too soon.

Well if ya gotta go, I suppose that's one of the better ways.

Fox News tells different story from CNN

CNN senior international correspondent Nic Robertson blasted Fox News [story was reported by Fox correspondent Jennifer Griffin] on Monday for its report that Libyan authorities used him and other journalists as "human shields" in order to prevent an attack on Muammar Gadhafi's compound in Tripoli the night before.

While Griffin is sticking by her reporting, she acknowledged that Fox News correspondent Steve Harrigan sent a security guard with a camera on the government-organized trip. "I did not know about that earlier today," she said. "I became aware of that this evening. That was my mistake and I apologize for that."

Fox had cameras on the scene of the story that their corespondent presented a story about. One has to wonder... if the most watched news source in the US had actual footage of reporters being used as human shields then why didn't they use it?

Reply 1 : Fox News tells different story from CNN

They have an agenda and they stick to it, regardless of reality.

And as you point out, if they had the footage they'd have shown it. Remember Peter Arnett of CNN broadcasting from Baghdad during Gulf War 1? Now that was news, and that was reporting.

Fox isn't a serious contender in any area of news, it's just a mouthpiece run by Roger Ailes for whatever he wants said.

Despite his Republican Congress origins, I'm quite impressed by Joe Scarborough on MSNBC. He's matured into a pretty good broadcaster.

Rob

Reply 2 : Fox News tells different story from CNN

Facts not their style? Sticking to am agenda? Look in a mirror.

Reply 3 : Fox News tells different story from CNN

I also remember the Operation Tailwind" story.

Reply 4 : Fox News tells different story from CNN

They brought the reporters to a place that might be targeted, no? What is "actual footage of reporters being used as human shields?"

She said she got the intelligence from British sources. Was that a lie? Any evidence she did not?

Reply 5 : Fox News tells different story from CNN

One might assume that a "human shield" is innocent people being held at strategic locations in order to dissuade a military strike on that location.

"British fighter jets had seven missiles," Griffin told Fox News anchor Jon Scott Monday afternoon. "They were in fact going to be fired from tornado fighter planes onto that compound, but the mission had to be cut short because of the presence of CNN television crews and Reuters journalists on the ground who had been taken to the site."

From wagga-wakka (btw... love the handle) : What is "actual footage of reporters being used as human shields?"

"Fox News correspondent Steve Harrigan sent a security guard with a camera on the government-organized trip." The very trip that Griffin says CNN and Reuters Crews were being used as human shields also had Fox cameramen too. It is a darn shame that Fox editors and producers failed to use the footage they had... to back up Ms Griffins report. Pretty glaring mistake from the worlds' leading news source. I'll be looking forward to Ms Griffin using that footage in future rebuttals of CNN's slanderous claims of hypocrisy.

Reply 6 : Fox News tells different story from CNN

I think that it would be best to look at the original story. Link:

Good to see they had a chance to explain things better... than the 2 live broadcasts covering the story earlier in the day.

Acer Aspire 8930G: Blu Ray Problem

I have a Acer Aspire 8930G, bought brand new 2 years ago.

It's always had a problem playing blu rays. I got over the problem by not using the acer arcade deluxe player it comes with and instead using PowerDVD9.

Now I have a new problem in that the drive doesn't read blu ray discs, it doesn't even spin them up. The computer doesn't recognize any disc what so ever.

It plays DVDs fine but not Blu Rays.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I had the same problem with Blu-Rays, now mine won't even play DVD's or CD's. Once I get my other PC set up do the essentials I'm going to do a system restore back to factory settings to rule out a software error but if that doesn't cure it I'll be returning it for repair under my extended guarantee. What make is your Blu-Ray drive? Mine's a Panasonic. Does anyone know if these 8930's come with different manufacturer's of the Blu-Ray drive? I'll update this thread with my results once I do a system restore to defaults unless someone else rules out software errors first.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover is due out in April 2011. About damn time, been waiting on this one like forever.

Pre-purchase IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover on Steam

Reply 1 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

Yepp me to, it was on time.

Wounder how well my i7 740 and gtx460m would run this?

Reply 2 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

It has the same engine as wop right?

Reply 3 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

I have IL2 1946 and LOVE it! I wonder how this one will fair.

Reply 4 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

Looks great! Just watched the steam trailer for the second time.

Reply 5 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

Very excited about this one... I am curious too, is it using a new engine separate from the Wings of Prey engine? I know things got a bit confusing when Wings of Prey came out and was based on the console version Birds of Prey... both fun games I highly recommend, but definitely not original IL2.

Also, I have another question I can't figure out.. Cliffs of Dover is going to require Steam from everything I can tell, which is awesome, but here's my question:

Steam shows a release date of April 19th for me, where as it's supposedly March 31st in Europe.

This site says they will sell it to me, with the REST OF WORLD copy on March 31st, for $5 cheaper too...

Just Flight - Product page for IL-2 Cliffs of Dover (PRE-ORDER - released 31/3)

So, will the key they sell me activate on Steam on release date they show, or on the Steam date? Confused...

Reply 6 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

is this game fun "arcadish" or its like real-life sim where you spend 30 minutes flying, can die from single hit and go out of ammo in 1 minute?

Reply 7 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

This is a simulation but I think it has an arcade mode too. You learn to improve your skill greatly because one wrong move can spell the end of 30 minutes of progress.

Reply 8 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

still playing il-2 and CAN not wait for the new one! The only question is that who will lead the NBR squadron

Reply 9 : IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (About Damn Time!)

I may need a new stick so I can play this. Any suggestions?

System Restore To Get Wireless Connection

After turning on my computer I can't get an internet connection, or even a router connection unless I do a "System Restore".
Anyone know what this means and how to fix it?

I am using windows xp if that matters.

Thanks

Reply 1 : System Restore To Get Wireless Connection

For example and it could be very wrong is that I saw this when an antivirus expired. To work this, a lot more digging would be needed.

Sadly I think repairing Windows should be the next big thing Microsoft should fix.

Reply 2 : System Restore To Get Wireless Connection

Is it the kind of digging that I could do or do you think it's non repairable from where I stand?

Reply 3 : System Restore To Get Wireless Connection

Any guess will be a guess. When you post there are some words in red to save you time. It asks for make, model and details.

Given only what you tell, the fix is going to guessed and guessed many times.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 8200 with Intel(R), Pentium(R), and 4 CPU

The operating system is a Windows XP Home Edition version 2002, service pack 3

I'm not sure, but I think the model# is chk7321. It's the only number that I could find on the back of the computer.

If you need any more info, please let me know because I would love to get to the bottom of this.

Thank you

help with GPU

Hi guys !

Yesterday I was changing my processor, and I also was renewing the thermal compound from my GPU, but I manage to drop my GPU, when I turned on my alienware, there was no image at all, i am pretty sure that everything else is ok since I could hear the sound from some program, but the image is dead.

My questions is, I am going to buy a new GPU, should I buy the same one? which was an ATI mobility 5850 or should I buy a different one ?

Reply 1 : help with GPU

First of all try to reseat it. Do you still have warranty?

Btw, why did you take out the GPU for renewing the TIM?

Reply 2 : help with GPU

I really dont know why I take it off, but anyways I already tried to reseat it, and is not working. I have Warranty, but I opened the laptop,so I think it just cancel my warranty isnt it right ?

Reply 3 : help with GPU

No, they won't notice, and you're totally allowed to open the system. I recommend calling them.

Reply 4 : help with GPU

ok thanks !

Reply 5 : help with GPU

Just to save yourself any trouble just don't mention you touched the GPU even thought you are allowed too.

Alienware and Dell woes the poor guy from this thread is being treated awfully.

Also i would try putting your old CPU back in and see if everything works normally then.

Reply 6 : help with GPU

I had a warrenty with future shop, and they dont me that I cant touch it, and is in the contratc, I will have to buy a GPU. Does anyone know where can I buy a ATI mobility 5850 ?

Reply 7 : help with GPU

Dell sells them.

Why did you tell them you touched it? Would they be able to tell?

Reply 8 : help with GPU

I'm impressed by your honest lol but I wouldn't tell them i touched it either.

Put the original CPU back in and keep quiet once the GPU is fixed put our new CPU back in xD.

If you do insist on being a better person than me get the card from dell as they sell the fastest version. DDR5.

anyone know if its possible to mod the insyde bios by using the Insyde Flash Utility for InsydeH2O to dump a 1MB version of my bios then use the EzH2O tool to edit the bios and hex to find the right bytes?

don't wanna overclock anymore though.

That won't take long

Did it?

Wireless broadband drain

Does anyone have a solution to the very noticeable drain (particularly with streaming video) of broadband signal to wired computers by wireless routers? The drain may actually be evenly divided, but streaming on my iPad doesn't seem to be affected. I'm using a NETGEAR WGR614v10 router.

Reply 1 : Wireless broadband drain

Could use a smaller image and be less a drain. So far the fix is to get a higher speed internet connection.

"GOP Bill Would Force IRS to Conduct Abortion Audits"

"Were you raped? Was it incest? And other questions the government's tax cops would have to ask women who've terminated pregnancies."

- By Nick Baumann

http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/03/gop-bill-irs-abortion-audits
Fri Mar. 18, 2011 12:01 AM PDT

"Under a GOP-backed bill expected to sail through the House of Representatives, the Internal Revenue Service would be forced to police how Americans have paid for their abortions. To ensure that taxpayers complied with the law, IRS agents would have to investigate whether certain terminated pregnancies were the result of rape or incest. And one tax expert says that the measure could even lead to questions on tax forms: Have you had an abortion? Did you keep your receipt?

"In testimony to a House taxation subcommittee on Wednesday, Thomas Barthold, the chief of staff of the nonpartisan Joint Tax Committee, confirmed that one consequence of the Republicans' "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" would be to turn IRS agents into abortion cops-that is, during an audit, they'd have to determine, from evidence provided by the taxpayer, whether any tax benefit had been inappropriately used to pay for an abortion."

Despite the fact that virtually none of you know about Mother Jones magazine, it has been in existence for decades, since I've been reading it that long, and has a very good reputation for accuracy and dogged reporting.

This just confirms everything I thought when I first heard about the wording of the Health Care Act. This new legislation is an obscenity and an invasion of privacy.

To reiterate Pierre Elliott Trudeau's famous quotation when he was Health Minister in 1966, "The State has no place in the bedrooms of the Nation."

... many of us know what "Mother Jones Magazine" is. Instead of pointing out how erudite you are compared to the rest of us, you might take the time to tell us which "Health Care Act" you are so alarmed about?

Bought MBP 13" And Totally Disappointed

Greetings,

Be careful I am being totally biased here.

So I bought me a MBP 13" with C2D and nVidia GeForce 9400M.

First thing was that it was my first time buying a macbook, so OS X was totally new to me, and utter disappointment as well (not quite practical I must say compared to Windows). It misses alot, but only good thing about it is how fast and unbloated it is.

Also, on a side note, the form factor does appear so minimalistic and ugly, that's just me.

I am considering selling the device soon.

As I said, I am being biased here, flame me if you wish.

Reply 1 : Bought MBP 13" And Totally Disappointed

Hope you didn't pay much for it. Sounds like it was at least two models ago, 2009.

I am from saudi arabia and bought it for 1226 dollar, since newer models are insanely expensive around here.

I am going to france in a couple of month and will sell it there, hopefully I'll gain profit or at least won't lose much of its value.

To me I find Lenovo Thinkpad to look far better than Macbooks in general.

Reply 5 : Bought MBP 13" And Totally Disappointed

Not sure if you will be able to sell it for that much in France. 1220$ is about 860€ and at least in Germany you can get older Macbook Pros cheaper than that. The 2010 Macbook Pro (last model before current refresh) is being sold of for 899€ new currently. The keyboard will also be an issue. I am assuming it is not a French Keyboard.

My advice for OSX is, try to be open minded and give it a chance. Many things are easier than Windows but might seem harder for you because how it is done is just different. Of course there are also many things that are better solved in Windows. It depends on your needs.

If you think the Macbook is ugly why did you buy one? You did no research at all before buying?

I am gonna be patient and will give OS X another shot, I am being open minded mostly to new phones OS, but this is the first time I ever try a totally new os after 12 years of windows-only usage.

I did like the docking, the build quality and the smooth performance so far, but the OS X does seem to miss some stuff and it's unpractical in some situations (like for example the right click).

Did researched on the internet and in the market around here, but I bought it based totally on my desires and not logic, and right now I am regretting it and learned the lesson.

Was between Thinkpad and MBP, but I thought (why not give OS X a try) and here I am.

Reply 7 : Bought MBP 13" And Totally Disappointed

Play around with the Trackpad configuration. Two finger scrolling and two finger right click can be nice.

Video Ram locked in Bios!?

Hey! I've got an Acer Aspire 6530 which I love to bits (its got an inbuilt subwoofer with great sound in the inbuilt speakers! AMD Turion X2 Dual Core 2.0Ghz 4 Gig DDR2 Ram )

However in a mission to upgrade the BIOS to see if I could overclock the CPU - the original Bios 3217 was replaced with a new bios that locked the Video Ram at 256 meg!

With the original Bios 3217 I had it running on 512 meg before which allowed changes up to 1024 meg maximum and the gaming was awesome.

I desperately want my old Bios back (3217) which I can't find at any Acer website or around the net - or a modified Bios that unlocks my Video Ram and especially the original mission of overclocking my CPU and Ram if possible...

Any ideas or tips?

If your looking for some style that will set your M15x from other M15x's

So I thought I would share that ColorWare has recently come out with a package for coloring the M15x and it is pretty cool. If you are not familiar with ColorWare they are a company who custom colors electronics. I've used them for my clients computers before and I would say that the quality is supreme.

ColorWare - Alienware M15X

This is pretty cool. But it will be a very scarce population who will opt for the $500 price tag!

Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

Question:

I have a question: Why does my laptop suddenly stop? I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 running Windows XP with 2GB ram memory and 80GB hard disc and 40 percent free space. Without notice, while running programs or simply surfing the Internet, it sometimes just stops, it doesnt turn off, it just freezes and becomes motionless, and there is no way I can do any thing until I manually turn it off. I have McAfee virus scan installed and PC Tools, and they both tell me the computer is free of viruses. What can I do? Is my hard drive too small? Should I buy an external hard drive? What could it be? Please help me with down to earth English. Thank you in advance!

Reply 1 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

I've had a similiar problem with Norton Internet Security and PCTools.
I found that PCTools has a slight problem working and playing
together with others. My symptom was the computer would reboot and then say Windows has recovered from a serious error.By disabling PCTools I avoided the problem and I've reported it to PCTools who have elevated it to the engineering level. In the meantime I suggest that you disable PCTools and launch it manually when you need it.

I have an HP desktop PC that reboots randomly also, with the same message and I don't have EITHER of those programs on it! So I don't think it's the fault of those programs! It's got to be something else, but I don't know what.

Reply 3 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

I have a HP Laptop Pavillion with WIN XP SVCPK3. It goes blue screen and dumps physical memory randomly. I reboot it, it works for a short time then goes blue again. I've emailed HP and Microsoft on this problem and their expedient reply is "go get it fixed by an authorized repair facility". In frustration, I was forced to re-load the operating system from scratch as I had no files or documents that I needed to save and the restore point didn't work. I couldn't do that either. HELP!

Reply 4 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

try to restore your operating system yo the previous working day,This procedure may he;p you to fix this problem.

Reply 5 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

Too may instructions, too few instructors. Windows knows no escape. It tries to process all things all the time but, it's not the ADHD software we all seem to need. It just can't do it all. Most times you have no idea all the things it's trying to do & I'm not certian it does either.

Reply 6 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

woah God help us if Windows had ADHD, we'd never get anything done. I have ADHD and I can just imagine what Windows would be like constantly switching from one task to the next, never starting or finishing anything properly. LOL!

Reply 7 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

It could be that a process that Windows is running is causing the PC to hang untill the issue is resolved. That's the easy part, the hard part is finding which process is hanging the system. I had a similar problem on a desktop, by using task manager or Process Explorer (www.sysinternals.com) I found my problem was inetinfo.exe. I killed the process and restarted it, for my problem this corrected the issue. To resolve your issue, some detective work will be required. Using the Processes tab on Task Manager gives you a simplified view of whats running, by using Process Explorer you get a much more detailed view. As mentioned before there could be some serious detective work involved(I've done this on an XP machine, never tried it on Vista...yet). Task Manager will NOT let you kill a process critical to Windows, where Process Explorer might, you can use both progs concurrently or Process Explorer can be set up to replace Task Manager(this switch IS reversible in Process Explorer). A basic understanding of Windows processes might be helpfull. If your unsure, check the Microsoft web site (kb pages, tech web, etc.) by doing a search to find out what the process does (copy the process name [usually ending in *.exe] into the MS site's search window. When the process is found, you can either kill it or restart it, depending on how critical it is to windows.

Also download these programs that are highly rated and are FREE.
They are "Advanced System Care" and "Glary Utilities".

Reply 9 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

First try using a program called "C Cleaner" it helps by cleaning out junk files that are left behind by other applications and it helps clean up windows registry. Second, scan for spyware. Use a couple of different programs to do this. As some spyware removers are better in removing certain types of spyware. "Hijack This" is a very good program you can use to see what services and processes are running on your PC at any given time. Do a search to make sure you use it correctly. If you misuse "Hijack This" it can make your PC worse.

Check to make sure system fans are running hose the vents off with canned air the possible problem is bad ram down load mem test and run it on boot up it will exercise your memory and see if it throwing up under load

It is Windows!!!
I am not being a smart a**.
OR it could be low memory resources.

Reply 12 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

I know for fact that the name brands or well known brands anti-virus programs are responsible for many a PC failures.
I took off symantec from my Powerbook (which doesn't need it anyway) and installed a free anti virus called ClamXav. This one you can set up to run lightly in the background per the folders you choose. I have been running it for over a two weeks and so far it's spot on. I only use it really to check my emails to make sure I don't pass it on to a PC recipient.
Could be driver issues.
How about sticking your Windows install disc into your tower and do a system restore ( be careful not to choose the reformat option) make sure to back up any important personal files at the very least since it sounds like you don't have any idea of when it freezes up.
Do all your necessary maintenance i.e. disk defrag, disk clean up etc.

Good luck.
Again like I said that is Windows for you. I am not an Apple fanboy but I just can't ignore 10+ years of PC nightmares versus 7 months trouble free Mac usage. Proprietary software and hardware has it's pros and cons.

Reply 13 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

I figured if I read down far enough I'd find someone singing the praises of the "trouble-free" MAC !! Give us a break will you - if the MAC had to do half as much as the PC it would explode. You'd think a proprietary system would be perfect - NOT!!!

There's a reason why the MAC still hasn't broken the double digit mark in market share while the Windows PC holds a 90% share. The world plays on a MAC and works on a PC.

Reply 14 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

I AGREE WITH JOHNVAND.

The question posted to try and help Jose to solve his problem not for Mac fan boys to come here and tell that the Mac does not have problems.

Stick to the Question in helping.

Early adopters of Apple's latest MacBook Pros and MacBooks (shown here) are reporting glitches with the laptops.

(Credit: CNET)
Problems with Apple's newly redesigned MacBooks are being reported on Apple discussion boards and across the Internet.

The new notebooks, which have already run into problems with the trackpad, are said to have problems with video performance, third-party memory chips, and staying in sleep mode. It's always difficult to get a sense of how widespread such problems are from tracking message board posts--and every computer ever made has had problems--but the volume of such complaints regarding the new systems seems to be increasing.

HERE IS THE FULL STORY.

And at the end what is it? Mac related issues with Hardware.

Reply 15 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

You may want to consider purchasing a larger laptop hard drive. Once you start getting under 50% of capacity, you can have issues.
Also, I would go to windowsupdate.com or Dell's web site and make sure you have every current update for Windows and other products.

I would also download the following programs:

AdAware
Hijack This
Spybot Search and Destroy

Once you download and install those programs, they should be able to tell you if you have spyware, malware, or other bad stuff on your PC.

McAfee is good for detecting viruses.

You should also consider purchasing Diskkeeper for your PC, It is a great product for keeping your PC and defragmented as possible.

The only product out of these 4 you would have to pay for is Diskeeper.

Good luck

Reply 16 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

Why down load more program's. That's not alway a solition but a contributing factor to more headaches. The best thing I did was get rid of Mcfee and norton. Spybot never catches what you want it to. Panda internet security has been the best by far for catching all those nasty spyware, troj, and viruses for me. Spyware can really slow a system down and freeze it up. All the microsoft updates can cause alot of problems also. They want you to keep up to date but boy howdy some of them are NIGHTMARES!

Reply 17 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

So you're saying if my 1TB drive goes below 400GB free space I'll have problems? Rubbish...

Reply 18 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

...Get real!

For years, on several computers, I routinely have drives with less than 20% free space, sometimes as low as 5 to 2% free space and it never caused me any problem at all.
The only isue with filled up drives, is a slowdown when accessing SOME files, and the fact that some defragmenters can't work with less than 15% free space, like the one that comes with Windows.

Anytime you have more than 20% free space, disk clutter is NOT the cause of your problems.

In my experience, McAfee is not so great. I used to use it. Then, after some very serious performence degradation and false positives, not resolved by uninstalling, reinsytalling, I switched to another. I then found that it missed a few nasties. A friend had worst experience with Norton AV, that missed about 15 virus. I now use a free AV.

I don't recommend "hijack this" to a novice user. It's very powerfull, and usualy TO powerfull for a great many.

I agree that Diskkeeper is a marvelous application. I've been using it for the last 7 years. One of the best defragmenter you can get. It CAN defragment a drive with only 1% free space, it will only take more time for the job to finish. The only one that could beat it was Norton SpeedDisk for DOS of the late 80' end early 90's that only needed 1 free cluster...

Reply 19 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

This is a VERY difficult problem to diagnose because so many things can cause it. Usually, you do this by elimination, but it's even more difficult in a laptop because you can't substitute "known good" parts when dealing with a laptop.

First thing: Download Memtest or Memtest86 (memory diagnostics) and run them. This is easy to do and quick and is a good candidate for a possible cause. You want to run quite a few passes (may take hours or even overnight). You MUST get ZERO errors. If memtest freezes up, then you KNOW it's a hardware problem and not a software problem (that is not an insignificant point). Other than new memory, almost all other hardware problems will have to involve the manufacturer or MAJOR new parts (e.g. motherboard).

If that passes (or even if it fails) ... CPU overheating is a common problem in laptops. The cooling systems clog up with dust, hair, etc. These can be cleaned but the procedure varies by model (this happens on desktops also but it's more obvious and easier to deal with). Disassembly of the laptop may be required to do a complete cleaning, but a "good enough" job MAY be possible without disassembly. The primary tool is a can of compressed air.

On a desktop, the power supply would be my next suspect, but on a laptop the supply in question (which is NOT the AC adapter) is part of the motherboard.

At this point, especially on a laptop, the HARDWARE options begin to point to the motherboard. This is, however, usually impossible to deal with if the laptop is out of warranty (it will often cost as much as a new laptop).

That leaves the software causes, of which there are many. The only practical way to attack software causes is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows. That is an involved and difficult process, and I actually suggest that you do this on a different hard drive (if necessary, consider buying a small (possibly used) hard drive cheap to do this on). If the new installation doesn't freeze, you can presume that it's a software issue.

Two other comments:

1. Is the computer REALLY locked up? Does control-Alt-Delete work? Does the caps lock key LIGHT go on and off when you press the caps lock key? If either of these works, the computer is not REALLY locked up and it's almost certainly a software problem (fix: reinstall Windows). BUT ...

2. People are too quick to assume it's a software problem, when, often, it IS a hardware problem.

click start, click run type prefetch, select all and then delete all the files, click start, click run type temp, select all and then delete all the files, click start, click run type % temp%, select all and then delete all the files, click start, click run type msconfig, under startup tab, select disable all and then restart the computer, that would do, if still is the problem, run the memory test, or else simply, reseat the hdd data and power cables, and reseat the memory, possible clean with a soft cloth, donot use canned air, or any liquid cleaner, click start->allprograms->accessories->system tools->system restore, and restore the computer to an earlier date, say to some date in the early november, with 2 gb ram and winxp, the computer would work fine, being a dell technician i would recommend these, also possible run ccleaner, note down which application mostly causes the system to freeze, note down when it actually happens and post the same, open task manager and under process tab find which application is taking up too much memory and then post the same, if you have doubts on how to do the above procedures, visit http://screenshots.leeindy.com/msconfig_general.shtml

Reply 22 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

sometimes this mightbe a hardware issue, so what i would suggest, turn off the computer and when you turn on your laptop press and hold the fn key on the keyboard and turn on the computer using the power button, you would see a diagnostics test menu, wherein you should run the quick test on the hardware, if any issues with the hard ware then you can easily identify which is causing this issue, ,, for desktop restart the computer and on dell logo, keep tappping the f12 key and get into boot to utility partition and then run the quick test to check your hardware functionality, if you guys find any error message post the same, help would come for sure!!!!

good luck

Reply 23 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

I realize you posted this a long time ago, but i found your suggestions and ran a diagnostic test on my laptop. It came back with Error Cod 0142, Hard Drive 0 test unsuccessful. Status 79. Any help and can give me?

Reply 24 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

The only place to lookup the meaning of that error code and status is the manual of the disk, the documentation of the test program or the help of the test program.
As we have none of the three at hand, we can't tell you.

But I would start with replacing the hard disk and see if that helps.

Try using a usb cooler under your 1501. I had a 1501 do the same thing and found it was getting too warm. Hope this helps.

Reply 26 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

Often dust clogs up the tiny ventilation ports on computers overheating the system and causing it to freeze.

Reply 27 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

It may be a device driver problem: try starting your system in safe mode (press F8 while booting and choose "safe mode" from the boot menu), with just the minimal set of drivers loaded. If you can run the system for a decent length of time in safe mode, try rebooting back into normal mode and disabling your device drivers from "My Computer" properties, one by one, until you find any driver that's causing the problem. Don't forget to re-enable the drivers which *weren't* causing the problem, afterwards!

If this doesn't help, then check the Windows Task Manager (press CTRL-ALT-DEL together, once) and select the "Processes" tab to see if there's something running in the background which is using a lot of your processor power (more than [roughly] 80% of processor is usually a problem if it's doing it for a long time). If so, right-click on it and choose "end process" to kill the offending program.

Also, you can check the programs which are running at startup by choosing "Run" from the start menu and then typing "msconfig" in the box which appears. Go to the "startup" tab and then scroll through the list of programs which are loaded at startup. If there are any which you don't recognise, then try searching for them by Googling the name of the program file. If you find anything which isn't necessary, then disable it.

One more thing which may cause problems is conflicts between programs, eg having 2 lots of antivirus software running simultaneously, or a firewall that doesn't agree with your antivirus. You can try turning off your security software to see if this helps, but always make sure you have scanned your computer for viruses before switching the antivirus program off, AND *ALWAYS* MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET IF YOU HAVE YOUR FIREWALL OR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE SWITCHED OFF!!!

Hope this is of help.

You need to have yor laptop cleaned out It is over heating

Reply 29 : Windows XP system just randomly freezes, whats causing this?

Depending on the industry you are in, different terminology can be used for the same phenomenon; Your screen freezes up. This is not an easy answer. Most of time it's poor quality from the PC manufacturer. I have dealt with these issues all of time. It could be from the following:

1. Hardware problem related to the CPU on how it executes certain instructions.
2. Software problem in the BIOS.
3. Heat related issue. Internals get too hot and the CPU begins to act flakey, system freezes.

For number 1 you can't really do anything about it. It's just poor quality from the chip manfacturer (Intel/AMD)that the PC manufacturer failed to Identify. Sometimes the CPU manufacturer ship substandard CPU chips to the PC manufacturer that contain errors where these freezes can occur.

For 2 check if your PC manufacturer has an update to the BIOS and see if you can reload the latest version. Most of the time it's just flashing the BIOS. Sometimes this can correct the problem.

For 3, heat. My Toshiba freezes when it doesn't get enough ventilation. So I purchased a little stand with a fan and my laptop not longer freezes. You can aquire these little built-in fan-stands at Best-Buy. Make sure your laptop gets plenty of ventiltion. Determine if there are any fans in the laptop and make sure they are not obstructed.

There could be other issues that could cause the freeze ups but the 3 above seems to be to be the most prevelant based on my experience. I have Windows Vista in my HP laptop and it never freezes. I don't think Vista is the cuprit unless you load it on to an old PC/laptop. Vista requires at leaast 2Gbytes of RAM memory.

Always have my macros and custom buttons

Hi,
I use Word 7 and I've created a dozen macros and associated custom buttons plus a custom Styles group and have these in a template I created for writing novel manuscripts. Lately I've come to realize that it would be even cooler to 'always' have these tools available in Word, especially when opening a document from someone else (which more often than not was created in Word XP).

Does anyone know if and how this might be done?

Thanks,
Rusty

Remote TV Wireless Connection

I have legal satellite TV with a two channel box, the second remote changes the channel on the living room satellite box via RF from the bedroom. I would like to put a TV in the kitchen and use the same remote to change the channel, but I don't want to splice into the cable and run it to the kitchen TV.

What's the best way to wirelessly send the signal from either the open red, white and yellow jacks (for the correct channel "2") on the back of the satellite box or from the bedroom TV cable to the kitchen set. I have both wireless internet in the house and a microwave which I use frequently when cooking, I really don't want interference from either.

The kitchen TV will be a Vizio 26 inch unit that used to reside in the living room until I bought a larger flat panel unit to replace it; it has both HDMI and colored jacks for input.

Thanks,
Roy

GPU temp monitor help please.

I currently use GPUZ to monitor my cards temps, but I wish it had a preset temp in which it would notify me that my cards were getting too hot.

Do you guys know of a program that does this? It would be great if there was a program that would sound a buzzer or something at a preset temp.

Reply 1 : GPU temp monitor help please.

MSI Afterburner has a setting where it displays the GPU temperature in-game. (Not sure if you're gaming or not.)

The GPU will shut off the laptop when gets too hot, which is usually around 105C.

Reply 2 : GPU temp monitor help please.

Thanks, the highest Ive seen is 91c, dont want to get any where close to 105!

Reply 3 : GPU temp monitor help please.

There is a desktop gadget for Win Vista/7 called GPU Observer. It displays the GPU name, percentage of GPU being currently used, clocks and temps. You might try it out.

Yes, I do play games. The thing is that MSI Afterburner can only display in-game GPU load, no matter what sort of setting I tried. Can you provide steps to display in-game temperature using MSI Afterburner?

Thank you very much.

It's slightly hidden.

Open MSI Afterburner and click "Settings" near the bottom. A screen should pop up and on the tabs on the top select "Monitoring." Half way down the screen, in green it says "Active hardware monitoring graphs." Select "GPU temperature" and check the box near the bottom that says "Show in On-Screen Display." It should say "in OSD" under properties if you did it correctly.
