A series of powerful earthquakes have struck northeast Japan on Friday afternoon, triggering warnings of tsunami as high as 10 metres and shaking buildings in Tokyo.
The first earthquake struck at 2:46 pm local time and measured magnitude-8.8, according to the US geological survey. Within 30 minutes the same region was rocked by two more big quakes of slighly lower intensity, Japanese news reports said.
The first quake, Japan's biggest for seven years, struck at a depth of six miles about 80 miles of the eastern coast, according to Japan's meteorological agency.
The Pacific tsunami warning centre in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii. (more at link)

Off the coast of Northern Japan, so the tsunami is going to spread out. Looks like Western US coastal states and South America are in the path of the tsunami.
The whole of the Pacific rim is in the way as well as Philippines, N. Australia, New Zealand, (again), Hawaii. Blimey, this could be as bad as it gets.

"The Japanese government has declared a nuclear power emergency situation following Friday's devastating earthquake, although the prime minister, Naoto Kan, said that there had been no reports of radiation leaks at any of the country's nuclear facilities.
The chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano, said the nuclear power plant in Fukushima developed a mechanical failure in the reactor cooling system after it was shut down during the earthquake".

The Japanese have been expecting a "big one" for some time but I don't think anyone imagined it would be THIS big.

The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.
"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

I see they are having aftershocks, around 7 on the scale. It is certainly a major event.
It puts us in our place in the general scheme of things, I think.

It boggles the mind to consider the power it would take to shift the entire planet and the trillions of tons involved 4in off it's axis!!
I don't know,we may may be in deep sh*t here.
We have our moon to stabilize the Earth's orbit,I doubt if our planet would wobble on it's axis for long,if at all.We have to consider the implications of a permanent shift!
What about weather patterns, the Jet Stream, will the Dems blame it on Bush??? Will we be better or worse off It's giving me a headache and I need a beer
It could be a blessing or we could be screwed!
Dr Michio Kaku teaches in NYC and I met him last summer at our dealership,I would love to discuss this with him if/when he comes back:)
To paraphrase a popular song......"That's Great,it starts with an Earthquake".

Good song for the occassion.
Daughter is in Okinawa, but that's hundreds of miles away and not in line of those tsunami waves thankfully, but everyone was restricted to camp, base post, etc. for the day.

Also, as another thread notes, they are a polite people with a reputation for obedience to authority in times of stress. So, mankind's best vs. a rather ordinary act of nature (or "act of God" as the insurance folks have it).

So I wonder now if the shifts were in the same direction or opposite?
Rotational axis shift would affect the seasonal variation certainly.

Second, an authoritative book I was reading just now guarantees that "the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace."

Just wanted to have that in front of me. My 'personal worst' was the 6.4 in CA about 30 years ago.
My go-to website
www.iris.edu
is so far behind that the data tabulation page doesn't even show the previous 6+ and 7+.
Nothing good can come of this.

Large whirlpool- something never seen, they say- 'strongest quake in Japan since records began'- a building drifting out to sea on the wave while on fire.

The benchmark Nikkei Stock Average slumped 10.1% to 8,647.75 in afternoon trading on a fresh wave of what appeared to be indiscriminate selling across sectors. The drop came on top of Monday's 6.2% tumble. Nikkei 225 futures traded in Osaka plunged 12% to 8,330, after trading was reportedly halted briefly earlier in the day.
The latest sell-off came after one more explosion was reported at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi plant's No. 2 reactor, on top of previous explosions at No. 1 and No. 3 reactors. Authorities said there was a fire at No. 4 reactor, though that was later reported extinguished.
