A series of powerful earthquakes have struck northeast Japan on Friday afternoon, triggering warnings of tsunami as high as 10 metres and shaking buildings in Tokyo.

The first earthquake struck at 2:46 pm local time and measured magnitude-8.8, according to the US geological survey. Within 30 minutes the same region was rocked by two more big quakes of slighly lower intensity, Japanese news reports said.

The first quake, Japan's biggest for seven years, struck at a depth of six miles about 80 miles of the eastern coast, according to Japan's meteorological agency.

The Pacific tsunami warning centre in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii. (more at link)

That's bad, really bad.

Off the coast of Northern Japan, so the tsunami is going to spread out. Looks like Western US coastal states and South America are in the path of the tsunami.

The whole of the Pacific rim is in the way as well as Philippines, N. Australia, New Zealand, (again), Hawaii. Blimey, this could be as bad as it gets.

Japan has declared a Nuclear Emergency as the Fukushima plant develops mechanical failure after shutdown.

"The Japanese government has declared a nuclear power emergency situation following Friday's devastating earthquake, although the prime minister, Naoto Kan, said that there had been no reports of radiation leaks at any of the country's nuclear facilities.

The chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano, said the nuclear power plant in Fukushima developed a mechanical failure in the reactor cooling system after it was shut down during the earthquake".

That's about all I can come up with right now. Still waiting to see what hits the west coast, though the computer models say it won't be too bad.

The Japanese have been expecting a "big one" for some time but I don't think anyone imagined it would be THIS big.

This is like Biblical proportions of destruction! The Earth's rotation shifted, a huge island shifted by 8 feet. Amazing!

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/12/japan.earthquake.tsunami.earth/index.html?hpt=T1
The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).

It might cause a wobble, like nudging a spinning top, but hopefully it would stabilise again. If not, now 'that' could be bad.

I see they are having aftershocks, around 7 on the scale. It is certainly a major event.

It puts us in our place in the general scheme of things, I think.

yet understand.

It boggles the mind to consider the power it would take to shift the entire planet and the trillions of tons involved 4in off it's axis!!

I don't know,we may may be in deep sh*t here.

We have our moon to stabilize the Earth's orbit,I doubt if our planet would wobble on it's axis for long,if at all.We have to consider the implications of a permanent shift!

What about weather patterns, the Jet Stream, will the Dems blame it on Bush??? Will we be better or worse off It's giving me a headache and I need a beer happy

It could be a blessing or we could be screwed!

Dr Michio Kaku teaches in NYC and I met him last summer at our dealership,I would love to discuss this with him if/when he comes back:)

To paraphrase a popular song......"That's Great,it starts with an Earthquake".

BTW,I am not afraid and I feel fine...lol.

Google is taking over the world. When I went to Youtube it no longer wanted to honor my account unless I linked it to a Google account. Why couldn't they just call it Google-Youtube and leave well enough alone?

Good song for the occassion.

Daughter is in Okinawa, but that's hundreds of miles away and not in line of those tsunami waves thankfully, but everyone was restricted to camp, base post, etc. for the day.

I would pick Japan: experience, western technology and construction codes. Now look. sad

Reply 10 : Earthquake 8.8 Hits Japan

dr, I think that a lot of their buildings held up well to the earthquake, but the bigger problem was damage due to the tsunami that came after the quake.

Reply 11 : Earthquake 8.8 Hits Japan

confirmed, that the tsunami was not 'water in, and then out', but 'water in, sludge out'. As an indicator of the water's power, that is.

Also, as another thread notes, they are a polite people with a reputation for obedience to authority in times of stress. So, mankind's best vs. a rather ordinary act of nature (or "act of God" as the insurance folks have it).

Last month's massive earthquake in Chile was powerful enough to shift the earth's axis and shorten the length of a day by 1.26 millionths of a second, researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory say.

So I wonder now if the shifts were in the same direction or opposite?

Rotational axis shift would affect the seasonal variation certainly.

First, the point on the planet's world line where it finds itself now is the result of many extreme natural disturbances over millennia. Yet its tilt, size, rotation, location in the solar system etc. are still "just right", as Goldilocks and the physicists say.

Second, an authoritative book I was reading just now guarantees that "the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace."

1 - 10 - 100 - 1000, on the Richter, anyway.

Just wanted to have that in front of me. My 'personal worst' was the 6.4 in CA about 30 years ago.

My go-to website
www.iris.edu
is so far behind that the data tabulation page doesn't even show the previous 6+ and 7+.

Nothing good can come of this.

Several videos available, with no commercial intros, I note.
Large whirlpool- something never seen, they say- 'strongest quake in Japan since records began'- a building drifting out to sea on the wave while on fire.

cars washing away, one of the airport, an office with people, and others.

Man.. I just saw this mentioned on the homepage of google.

Reply 18 : Earthquake 8.8 Hits Japan

in or near Japan?

Since you haven't mentioned her, I would guess you've heard and she's ok?

Reply 19 : Earthquake 8.8 Hits Japan

they were restricted to their camp for the day, but being so far away from the epicenter and the wave action being blocked by main island they didn't really get anything from it.

"Japan quake: Insurers hit by claim fears
Destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami could cost insurers tens of billion of dollars, analysts say."

International companies, in an increasingly small world.

And I expect that to worsen as days and weeks go by. Actually I was surprised there wasn't more reaction in the American markets than being down a half point in both major indexes.

Japanese stocks fell 6% and long-term government bond yields rose on Monday as investors expected the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country's northeast to take a toll on the economy and require significant government borrowing.

And WHO would/could they borrow from.....The Chinese?

Reply 23 : Earthquake 8.8 Hits Japan

At one point on opening it plunged another 12% and now has bounced a bit back to 10%, so a likely cascade will develop till a pullback total of about 20% total since the quake will become it's new normal for awhile.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/japans-nikkei-plunges-again-over-radiation-fears-2011-03-14?

The benchmark Nikkei Stock Average slumped 10.1% to 8,647.75 in afternoon trading on a fresh wave of what appeared to be indiscriminate selling across sectors. The drop came on top of Monday's 6.2% tumble. Nikkei 225 futures traded in Osaka plunged 12% to 8,330, after trading was reportedly halted briefly earlier in the day.

The latest sell-off came after one more explosion was reported at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi plant's No. 2 reactor, on top of previous explosions at No. 1 and No. 3 reactors. Authorities said there was a fire at No. 4 reactor, though that was later reported extinguished.
