HP 1610 printer-Vista. Printer works, scanner does not.

I installed a printer (hp 1610) to windows vista. I could not use the original CD that came with it so I went to HP website and downloaded the full version of the software and drivers. I did everything I was told to do including leaving the usb cord unattached until I was told to plug it in. My printer works fine. When I go to all programs to bring up the solution center to scan, I come up with a brief flash of the solution center image and then a box appears that says "no HP devices have been detected. HP center will now close". I uninstalled everything and did a complete new download and the same thing happens. Everything else seems to be working. I checked online for similar issues but any link that could solve my problem has been deleted or will not come up. If there is any solution, please let me know. Thanks
